EDC Knives

Sometime in the past, knives entered the pantheon of "Must Useful Items." It is strange to think about at first. The only thing knives do is cut things. How often do you cut things in your day-to-day life? Maybe, like, once a week. Some have jobs where they have to slice and dice regularly. People who open packages, for instance. Chefs. WWI trench combatants.

So why are so many Everyday Carrys rounded out with a good ole' knife? The reason, I think, is that the instant you need a knife and don't have one, you feel like an idiot. Or you die. You're car goes off a cliff, probably because you were drunk and subconsciously wanted to kill yourself; it hits the water and you realize there actually are things in this world worth living for. You go for the buckle, but it's stuck. Water rises to hip level and you panic. You curse yourself for not bringing a knife. Then you die, leaving your family to deal with your huge debt. That is why you should carry a blade.

But what kind of blade is best? We will get to that in a new post.
